Brake by name, break by nature.
Throughout her career with the Black Ferns Sevens, Michaela Brake has made a habit of breaking tackles and scoring tries.
In the side鈥檚 first match of the Vancouver Sevens on Saturday, the two culminated in the 29-year-old breaking the record for most tries ever scored in the women鈥檚 series.
With her third try in the Black Ferns鈥 58-7 win against Ireland on Saturday morning, Brake (nee Blyde) improved her career to 257 鈥 surpassing the mark set by former Black Fern Portia Woodman-Wickliffe.
鈥淵ou鈥檝e got to give full credit to Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, she鈥檚 been the top try scorer for her whole career and she set those standards, she put women鈥檚 sevens on the map,鈥 Brake told Sky Sport.
鈥淭o chase her has been an honour and I鈥檓 very grateful she was on my team. She鈥檚 been a role model of mine ever since I鈥檝e been in this team, since 2012. It鈥檚 an honour to be up there amongst her, so I鈥檓 going to hold onto it for as long as I can 鈥 until [Australian] Maddi Levi surpasses me.鈥
Levi, 22, went into the Vancouver event as the leading try scorer of the series, having scored 30 across the first three events and having scored 182 since making her debut in 2021.
For the Black Ferns, the win against Ireland was a strong way to start the campaign after a runners-up finish in Perth where they fell to a two-point loss to Australia in the final.
The tournament sees the team welcome Stacey Waaka into the fray for the first time this season after she suffered a fractured fibula while playing the NRLW for the Brisbane Broncos last September.
鈥淚t was a good first game for the girls to get good momentum. Obviously with having Stacey [Waaka] back on that edge to get the ball back for us so we鈥檙e not having the play on defence as much, so when we have that momentum we can stack some pretty good moments and just hold onto the ball for as long as we can.鈥
The match also saw rookie Maia Davis make her debut off the bench; the 18-year-old getting her first points on the board with a late conversion.
鈥淪he鈥檚 going to be very crucial for the next few years with the build-up into LA 2028 so to give her this experience in Vancouver is awesome,鈥 Brake said.
鈥淪he鈥檚 just going to build confidence every time she steps onto the field, and that was her first start. She鈥檚 got 15 years in this jersey, so she鈥檚 got a bright future ahead of her.鈥
