Shaun Johnson is set to be named in the Warriors鈥 starting side for their round 24 match-up against the Manly Sea Eagles in Sydney on Friday.

This news will likely bring a sigh of relief for many fans, as it comes ahead of the Warriors鈥 final home match of the season and Johnson鈥檚 last at Mount Smart next week against the Bulldogs.

Johnson was absent from the line-up that lost 32-34 to the Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Sunday due to a quadricep injury he sustained the week before in the loss to the Parramatta Eels.

Luke Metcalf, Adam Pompey, and Marcelo Montoya are all joining the squad in Sydney and are in contention for selection after spending some time on the sidelines.

Centre Ali Leiataua is out due to a concussion, and hooker Wayde Egan is being assessed for an elbow injury 鈥 more will be known about the extent of this injury over the coming hours.

With Metcalf nearing a return, head coach Andrew Webster was asked about next year and what a possible halves pairing could look like post-Johnson.

鈥淚鈥檓 not interested in how that combination looks. I don鈥檛 think three games is going to be enough. I鈥檝e seen enough of Te Maire, enough of Chanel, I know when Luke plays his best football what that looks like,鈥 Webster said.

鈥淟uke will be in our extended squad [for the weekend], but who plays might not necessarily be how it looks 1-17... Luke is definitely eligible and will be in consideration this weekend, especially off the back of two great NSW Cup performances.鈥

Ahead of their clash against the Dolphins on Sunday, the Warriors needed to win all four of their remaining games to make the top eight playoffs.

For a moment, it looked like they would live to fight another week as they overturned a 14-point halftime deficit late in the game. But the final turn in a chaotic labyrinth of a contest saw former Warriors鈥 half Sean O鈥橲ullivan end their season, with his two-point field goal in golden point time lifting the Dolphins to a 34-32 win.

The game followed a similar script to many in the Warriors鈥 campaign to date, as they seemed to be on top for long stretches before an error opened the door for the Dolphins. And it鈥檚 also a completely different rub of the green for the Warriors from their 2023 season when, more often than not, they won close encounters.

But Webster isn鈥檛 one to make excuses and hasn鈥檛 started yet.

鈥淎t the end of the day, we鈥檝e still not played our best football. You鈥檙e right, we did win those tight ones last year but we鈥檙e going to get better at them, and practice a lot, I鈥檓 going to take some ownership around that one but at the end of the day we conceded 32 points and that鈥檚 not good enough in the NRL,鈥 he said.

Webster thought the team still had plenty to play for and if everything went their way, they could make the playoffs.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 all about having pride in ourselves, our performances and the jersey. Everyone plays for different reasons 鈥 their families, the fans, the love of the game 鈥 but I think we鈥檝e got to do that justice.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot to play for. Mathematically it鈥檚 almost impossible to make it, based on other results, but I think we鈥檇 never forgive ourselves if we didn鈥檛 allow ourselves to do that. If all those results fall the way we want them to and don鈥檛 give ourselves a chance with three wins, we鈥檒l never forgive ourselves.

鈥淚鈥檝e got one eye on the fact that we want to win every week and are going to put the best team out there to win and we鈥檙e not just going to hand out jerseys for the sake of it but if I feel someone has earned the right, they鈥檒l definitely get an opportunity.鈥
