Scott Dixon: How Red Bull’s tricky car means less pressure on Liam Lawson

New Zealand鈥檚 most successful modern motorsport champion says the poor state of Red Bull鈥檚 car means there鈥檚 less pressure on fellow Kiwi Liam Lawson in .

said he has been exchanging text messages with Lawson as the younger driver goes into his crucial second Formula 1 weekend with Red Bull Racing.

Dixon said the Red Bull Racing team wasn鈥檛 the dominant force it had been in previous seasons, and the team鈥檚 car has long had a reputation for being tricky to drive.

鈥淢aybe there鈥檚 not as much pressure [on Lawson], because nobody鈥檚 saying that it鈥檚 the best car out there.鈥

Lawson鈥檚 highly anticipated  was in trouble from the outset. He struggled for speed through a practice blighted by technical problems, qualified third last in the 20 car field, then crashed out of the race.

Dixon, who is preparing for the  at the Thermal Club raceway in California this weekend, told the Herald he was in regular contact with Lawson.

鈥淲e were texting through Melbourne. I鈥檒l probably text him today or tomorrow,鈥 said Dixon.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not the way he would have wanted to have started, but you know, he鈥檚 been racing long enough to know how to reset.

鈥淗e鈥檚 a huge talent, and I鈥檓 pulling for him hardcore. I hope it goes extremely well. He鈥檚 a good dude, and I love seeing someone like him flying the flag for New Zealand.鈥

Dixon and Lawson first met at the Leadfoot Festival in 2016, when Lawson was 13. They鈥檝e since spent time together at an event held by Honda in Las Vegas last year. Honda supply engines to Red Bull Racing, and Dixon鈥檚 Chip Ganassi Racing Team in the United States.

鈥淗e鈥檚 definitely going into the gauntlet, man, alongside Max [Verstappen],鈥 said Dixon.

鈥淭he positive thing is that he gets to see, you know, some will say the greatest of our generation, or his generation, at work, so you can learn from the best.鈥

Verstappen has destroyed his teammates in Formula 1 so far, with Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon and Sergio Perez all being shown the door by Red Bull Racing for failing to measure up to the Dutch four-time champion.

Lawson was picked for this season in part, because his driving style is said to be similar to Verstappen鈥檚.

鈥淚 talk to Max occasionally,鈥 said Dixon. 鈥淗e鈥檒l describe his driving style as adaptive. He鈥檚 like: 鈥業 don鈥檛 really have a style, just, you know, it鈥檚 my style is to make the car go as fast as possible鈥.鈥

Asked what success would look like for Lawson in 2025, Dixon said he needed to take steps towards getting closer to Verstappen at each race.

鈥淚 think for him it is obviously, you know, progression [and] adaption.

鈥淎nd then鈥 what is [the] closeness for the difference between him and Max? In some situations I think they鈥檙e going to get to a circuit, and he鈥檒l be quicker than Max. There鈥檚 so many variables in motor racing that it鈥檚 never clear cut.

鈥淪ome podium finishes would be sweet. I鈥檇 like to see that. And a win would be awesome.鈥
