Australians who illegally downloaded the film Dallas Buyer's Club may be in trouble after a Federal Court ruling ordering ISPs to turn over the names and addresses of those pirates to the film's owners.
But Internet New Zealand says people here don't have to worry, as changes to the Copyright Act in 2011 mean their information can't be handed over to Hollywood authorities.
Internet New Zealand chief executive Jordan Carter says Australia's booming piracy problem is a result of the industry taking too long to adjust.
"What people want is all of this stuff available easily, cheaply and there, and my point is that things have got a lot better on that front."
Jordan Carter says there are some large differences in the law in the two countries.
"The chances of detection are the same anywhere in the world, and the consequences are the same, the difference is that in New Zealand it would come from the internet service provider."
