A Dunedin mum is calling on Air New Zealand to 鈥渉elp get us home鈥 after she and her two school-aged kids found themselves stuck in a chaotic US airport surrounded by 鈥渂lue screens of death鈥 and fellow stranded travellers amid the global IT outage.
鈥淚t is chaos here鈥, Katherine Jones told the Herald from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, where she was waiting in a 1000-person-long queue just before midnight (US time) to get her baggage after missing flight NZ29 to Auckland.
鈥淛ust help get us home鈥, was her message to Air New Zealand as she prepared to find a hotel for the night.

Jones and her kids, aged 8 and 10, were preparing to return from visiting family in North Carolina when the outage sparked by cybersecurity company CrowdStrike鈥檚 botched software update began affecting online systems around the world just over 24 hours ago, with US airlines among those impacted.
The trio were to fly from North Carolina鈥檚 Raleigh-Durham to San Francisco, via Denver, with United Airlines, after which they would board an Air New Zealand flight to Auckland, and then onto Dunedin.
But, nervous that outage-sparked flight delays would prevent them from reaching San Francisco, Jones tried contacting Air New Zealand via its app - 鈥渨hich is officially useless鈥 and kept crashing - and by phone, spending two hours on hold, she said.
鈥淎ll the communication is, 鈥楪o to the app, give them a call鈥, but it leads nowhere 鈥 so I couldn鈥檛 actually get a hold of anybody to see what we should do.鈥
At Raleigh-Durham International Airport, realising delays meant they couldn鈥檛 make their San Francisco connection, United re-booked the family to fly home via Houston.
When she was eventually able to speak to someone from Air New Zealand she was told the national carrier couldn鈥檛 help as the flight delays were with United, said Jones, a frequent flyer gold tier member.
鈥淎t the same time the United agents were telling me, 鈥楪et to where you need to be - a hub鈥, and to deal with it in Houston.
鈥淏ut it is actual chaos in Houston. I wish we hadn鈥檛 gone on the flight.鈥
While the layover in Houston was an hour and a half when re-booked, further delays eventually shortened that gap to 20 minutes, Jones said.
Because she didn鈥檛 need to go through check-in or security in Houston, it was a quick transfer to NZ29鈥瞫 departure gate - but not quick enough, with the family arriving at 10pm for the 9.55pm flight.
They were sorry Jones missed her connection due to the late arrival of her United Airlines flight, 鈥渨hich was two hours late鈥, an Air NZ spokeswoman said.
There had also been a high volume of calls to the airline鈥檚 Customer Care team yesterday due to the global IT outage, the spokeswoman said.

NZ29 was delayed and left at 10.30pm, but she and other late passengers - around a dozen, including a young family of four from Wellington - were not allowed to board because the gate had already closed, Jones said.
Gate agents were not able to help them before an Air New Zealand ground agent told Jones to again contact United, and that they didn鈥檛 know if there鈥檇 be space for the trio on the next scheduled flight from Houston to Auckland.
鈥淸They said], 鈥業t鈥檚 not our problem 鈥 and we don鈥檛 know if there will be space鈥 [on the next flight to Auckland].
鈥淪o I have no idea when we鈥檙e gonna get home.鈥
The family - who have travel insurance - have since found a hotel for the night, but Jones worried for other stranded Kiwis.
United鈥檚 flight delays weren鈥檛 Air New Zealand鈥檚 fault but the airline could鈥檝e been more empathetic to her and other passengers affected by a cyber outage that was 鈥渁n unprecedented event鈥, Jones said.
鈥淥n their social media, they鈥檙e saying, 鈥榃e鈥檙e fine, we鈥檙e keeping in touch with people鈥 and I just want people to know that is completely far from the truth.
鈥淚 guess why we usually love our national airline is because they go above and beyond. But not this time.鈥
