UK Premier Keir Starmer said the 鈥渂all was in Russia鈥檚 court鈥 and that President Vladimir Putin would 鈥渟ooner or later鈥 have to 鈥渃ome to the table,鈥 after a virtual summit on Saturday to drum up support for a coalition willing to protect any eventual ceasefire in Ukraine.
The British leader told some 26 fellow leaders as they joined the group call hosted by Downing St that they should focus on how to strengthen Ukraine, protect any ceasefire and keep up the pressure on Moscow.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon joined the call, and said after that New Zealand 鈥渟tands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine鈥.
While Ukraine had shown it was the 鈥減arty of peace鈥 by agreeing to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, 鈥淧utin is the one trying to delay,鈥 he said.
鈥淚f Putin is serious about peace, I think it鈥檚 very simple, he has to stop his barbaric attacks on Ukraine and agree to a ceasefire, and the world is watching,鈥 he added.
Military chiefs will now meet again on Thursday in the UK as the coalition moves into 鈥渢he operational phase,鈥 Starmer said after the talks.
鈥淭he group that met this morning is a bigger group than we had two weeks ago, there is a stronger collective resolve and new commitments were put on the table this morning,鈥 he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia wanted to achieve a 鈥渟tronger position鈥 militarily ahead of any ceasefire, more than three years since it invaded his country.
鈥淭hey want to improve their situation on the battlefield,鈥 Zelenskyy told a Kyiv press conference.
The ceasefire proposal by Trump鈥檚 team comes as Russia has momentum in many areas of the front in Ukraine.

The Russian leader did not commit to an immediate ceasefire proposed by the US, instead listing a string of demands.
But Zelenskyy said that Putin is 鈥渓ying about how a ceasefire is supposedly too complicated鈥.

鈥楯ust and lasting peace鈥
EU chief European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a message on X that Russia has to show 鈥渋t is willing to support a ceasefire leading to a just and lasting peace鈥.
And Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof also said on X it was 鈥渘ow important to continue to exert pressure on Russia to come to the negotiating table鈥.
Overnight fighting continued in the relentless three-year war, with Russia saying it had taken two more villages in its Kursk border region where it has launched an offensive to wrest back seized territory.
As moves have gathered pace for a ceasefire, Moscow has pushed this week to retake a large part of the land that Ukraine originally captured in western Kursk.
But Zelenskyy denied any 鈥渆ncirclement鈥 of his troops in the Kursk region.
鈥淥ur troops continue to hold back Russian and North Korean groupings in the Kursk region,鈥 he said on social media.
The Russian defence ministry said troops took control over the villages of Zaoleshenka and Rubanshchina 鈥 north and west of the town of Sudzha, the main town that Moscow reclaimed this week.

鈥楶utin not serious about peace鈥
Kyiv, meanwhile, said its air force had overnight downed 130 Iranian-made Russian-launched Shahed drones over 14 regions of the country.
鈥淭he Kremlin鈥檚 complete disregard for President Trump鈥檚 ceasefire proposal only serves to demonstrate that Putin is not serious about peace,鈥 Starmer said late Friday.
Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have been leading efforts to assemble a so-called 鈥渃oalition of the willing鈥 ever since Trump opened direct negotiations with Moscow last month.
They say the group is necessary 鈥 with US support 鈥 to provide Ukraine with security guarantees by deterring Putin from violating any ceasefire.
Starmer and Macron have said they are willing to put British and French troops on the ground in Ukraine but it is not clear if other countries are keen on doing the same.
鈥淪top the violence鈥
Macron also called on Russia late Friday to accept the proposal for a ceasefire, and stop making statements aimed at 鈥渄elaying the process鈥.
Germany on Friday likewise criticised Putin鈥檚 response to the US-proposed ceasefire in Ukraine as 鈥渁t best a delaying tactic鈥.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday he was 鈥渃autiously optimistic鈥 about reaching a truce, but acknowledged there was 鈥渁 lot of work that remains to be done鈥.
Starmer has said he welcomes any offer of support for the coalition, raising the prospect that some countries could contribute logistics or surveillance.
But Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reiterated after the call, which she joined, that Italy鈥檚 鈥減articipation in a possible military force on the ground is not envisaged鈥.
