  • Donald Trump and  argued over compromising with Russia during a White House meeting.
  •  with Russia or risk losing US support.
  • Zelenskyy opposed compromises,  and the deportation of Ukrainian children.

US President Donald Trump and  openly argued in the White House on Friday as they clashed on the need for compromising with what the Ukrainian President called Russia鈥檚 鈥渒iller鈥 leader.

as they sat in the Oval Office, telling him to be more 鈥渢hankful鈥 and saying, 鈥淵ou鈥檙e in no position to dictate what we鈥檙e going to feel鈥.

And he told the Ukrainian President that he either 鈥渕ake a deal鈥 with Russia 鈥渙r we鈥檙e out鈥.

US Vice-President JD Vance, sitting nearby, also attacked Zelenskyy, calling him 鈥渄isrespectful鈥.

Zelenskyy appeared to try to speak but was cut off.

The extraordinary outburst came after Trump said Ukraine will have to make 鈥渃ompromises鈥 in a truce with Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbour three years ago.

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 do any deals without compromises. So certainly he鈥檚 going to have to make some compromises, but hopefully they won鈥檛 be as big as some people think,鈥 Trump said.

But showing Trump pictures of war atrocities and referring to President Vladimir Putin, Zelenskyy said there should be 鈥渘o compromises with a killer on our territory鈥.

鈥淐razy Russians,鈥 he said, deported Ukrainian children and committed war crimes during their three-year invasion of his country.

Trump lashed out at Zelenskyy, who he said was 鈥渘ot acting at all thankful鈥 and not 鈥渘ice鈥.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e gambling with the lives of millions of people,鈥 Trump said. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e gambling with World War Three, and what you鈥檙e doing is very disrespectful to the country 鈥 this country.鈥

The dramatic public breakdown in the long-tense relationship between Zelenskyy and Trump came after their meeting 鈥 in front of a large group of journalists 鈥 appeared to get off to a friendlier start.

Zelenskyy had said, 鈥淚 think President Trump is on our side鈥.

He said that he would be speaking to the US President about the 鈥渃rucial鈥 need for a so-called US security 鈥渂ackstop鈥 to any European deployments of peacekeepers monitoring an eventual truce.

鈥淭his is crucial, this is what we want to speak about, this is very important,鈥 he said.

Trump has alarmed Kyiv and European allies with his abrupt U-turn in US policy, ending what had been full-throated support for Ukraine鈥檚 attempt to defeat the Russian invasion and casting himself as a mediator between Putin and Zelenskyy.

Trump said in the Oval Office that he had 鈥渟poken on numerous occasions鈥 to Putin 鈥 more than has been publicly reported beyond the lengthy call between the two leaders earlier this February.

Trump had told Zelenskyy that a truce is 鈥渇airly close鈥.

He also said a deal he was set to sign with  would be 鈥渧ery fair鈥.

The resources deal is intended to give the United States access to rare-earth and other critical minerals as part of an overall plan to help Ukraine recover after a truce.

Zelenskyy told Trump that he should visit his embattled nation. 鈥淵ou have to come and to look.鈥
