Latvia dispatched a warship on Sunday after damage to a fibre optic cable to Sweden that may have been 鈥渄ue to external factors鈥.
The navy said it had identified a 鈥渟uspect vessel鈥, the Michalis San, which was near the incident鈥檚 location along with two other ships.
The Michalis San was headed for Russia, according to several websites tracking naval traffic.

鈥淲e have a warship patrolling the Baltic Sea around the clock every day and night, allowing us to quickly dispatch it once we learnt about the damage,鈥 Latvian navy commander Maris Polencs said at a briefing on Sunday.
Prime Minister Evika Silina said: 鈥淲e have notified the Swedish authorities and are working together with them to assess the damage and its reason.鈥
Data 鈥榙isruption鈥
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said he had been in contact with Silina during the day.
鈥淭here is information suggesting that at least one data cable between Sweden and Latvia has been damaged in the Baltic Sea. The cable is owned by a Latvian entity,鈥 he posted on X.
鈥淪weden, Latvia and Nato are closely cooperating on the matter. Sweden will contribute with relevant capabilities to the effort to investigate the suspected incident.鈥
The damage occurred in Swedish territorial waters at a depth of at least 50 metres, officials said.
The cable belongs to Latvia鈥檚 state radio and television centre (LVRTC) which said in a statement that there had been 鈥渄isruptions in data transmission services鈥.
The company said alternatives had been found and end users would mostly not be affected although 鈥渢here may be delays in data transmission speeds鈥.
The statement added: 鈥淏ased on current findings, it is presumed that the cable is significantly damaged due to external factors. LVRTC has initiated criminal procedural actions.鈥
European Union president Ursula von der Leyen expressed her 鈥渇ull solidarity鈥 with the countries affected by the incident.
鈥淭he resilience and security of our critical infrastructure is a top priority,鈥 von der Leyen wrote on X.
