United States听Democrats at the highest levels,听including former President Barack Obama, are making a critical push for Joe Biden to reconsider his election bid.听
US President听Joe Biden听is said to be taking seriously calls to step aside as the Democratic presidential candidate and multiple party officials think an exit is a matter of time.听
鈥滺is soul searching is actually happening, I know that for a fact,鈥 said one source familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named.听
鈥滺e鈥檚 thinking about this very seriously.鈥听
Biden, 81, has faced听increasing pressure from party heavyweights听to cede his position as the Democrats鈥 presidential candidate after a听shoddy debate performance听against his Republican rival, former President听Donald Trump, raised fears about his age and ability to win听in November.听
He has pushed back defiantly against those calls, arguing that he has won millions of votes in primary races over the past several months and is Democratic voters鈥 choice. As recently as Wednesday, he vowed 鈥淚 am all in鈥 the 2024 race.听
However, a Democratic congressional aide said the writing appeared to be on the wall after senior members of Congress, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer,听reportedly urged him to drop out.听
鈥滻t feels like it鈥檚 a matter of ... when, not if,鈥 the aide said.听
Democratic Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, a close Biden ally, told CNN on Thursday that Biden would be 鈥渞esting and reflecting鈥 this weekend as he听recovers from Covid.听
He had been asking for information on polling data and was weighing seriously the input of those he trusted and admired, Coons said, adding that he still thought Biden was the best candidate.听
Biden is convalescing at his home in Rehoboth Beach,听Delaware. He had no public events on Thursday after concluding a trip to the swing state of听Nevada听on Wednesday.听

Biden鈥檚 campaign is focusing on three out of seven battleground states after the TV debate 鈥 a narrow path to victory. Officials have rejected suggestions that he is ready to step aside.听
鈥滺e is not wavering on anything. The President has made his decision,鈥 deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks said in Milwaukee, where the Republican convention is taking place.听
鈥滼oe Biden has said he is running for President of the United States. Our campaign is moving forward.鈥听
However, another source in the Biden campaign said the opposite: 鈥淵es, it鈥檚 over. Just a matter of time.鈥听
Democratic Senator John Hickenlooper, of Colorado, said he believed Biden was working towards a decision and would opt for what was best for the country.听
鈥滼oe Biden has always put the country first. He鈥檚 done what鈥檚 best for America ... I think he鈥檒l keep doing so,鈥 Hickenlooper told Reuters on Wednesday, adding there were indications it would be best for the US if he stepped aside.听
Former House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi backed Representative Adam Schiff鈥檚 call for Biden to step aside, according to a top White House source with direct knowledge of the matter. However, a source close to Pelosi 鈥 one of the most influential figures in the Democratic Party 鈥 said Schiff did not consult Pelosi before making his concerns public.听
