- South Africa called the expulsion 鈥渞egrettable鈥 and urged diplomatic decorum while emphasising a commitment to US relations.
- The move follows rising tensions, including Trump鈥檚 freeze on US aid and comments on land seizures in South Africa.
The US decision to expel South Africa鈥檚 ambassador was 鈥渞egrettable,鈥 the office of the South African President said Saturday, after Washington鈥檚 top diplomat accused the envoy of hating America and President Donald Trump.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that South Africa鈥檚 ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, was 鈥渘o longer welcome鈥 in the United States.
Rasool is 鈥渁 race-baiting politician who hates America and hates @POTUS,鈥 Rubio posted on X, referring to Trump by his White House X account handle.
鈥淲e have nothing to discuss with him and so he is considered PERSONA NON GRATA.鈥
South Africa鈥檚 presidency said in a statement it had 鈥渘oted the regrettable expulsion鈥 and urged 鈥渁ll relevant and impacted stakeholders to maintain the established diplomatic decorum in their engagement with the matter鈥.
鈥淪outh Africa remains committed to building a mutually beneficial relationship with the United States of America,鈥 the presidency said.
The expulsion of the ambassador 鈥 a very rare move by the United States 鈥 is the latest development in rising tensions between Washington and Pretoria.
Trump in February froze US aid to South Africa, citing a law in the country that he alleges allows land to be seized from white farmers.
Last week, Trump further fuelled tensions, saying South Africa鈥檚 farmers were welcome to settle in the United States after repeating his accusations that the Government was 鈥渃onfiscating鈥 land from white people.
Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that 鈥渁ny Farmer (with family!) from South Africa, seeking to flee that country for reasons of safety, will be invited into the United States of America with a rapid pathway to Citizenship鈥.

One of Trump鈥檚 closest allies is South African-born billionaire Elon Musk, who has accused South African President Cyril Ramaphosa鈥檚 Government of having 鈥渙penly racist ownership laws鈥.
Land ownership is a contentious issue in South Africa, with most farmland still owned by white people three decades after the end of apartheid and the Government under pressure to implement reforms.
During a G20 event in South Africa last month, Ramaphosa said he had a 鈥渨onderful鈥 call with Trump soon after the US leader took office in January.
But relations later 鈥渟eemed to go a little bit off the rails,鈥 he said.
In his X post, Rubio linked to an article from the conservative news outlet Breitbart, which addressed Rasool鈥檚 remarks via livestream to a foreign policy seminar on Friday.
鈥淗e said that white supremacism was motivating Trump鈥檚 鈥榙isrespect鈥 for the 鈥榗urrent hegemonic order鈥 of the world,鈥 Breitbart reported, adding that Rasool noted that Trump鈥檚 Make America Great Again movement 鈥渨as a white supremacist response to growing demographic diversity in the United States鈥.
Rasool, an anti-apartheid campaigner in his youth, has expressed anger towards the Israeli Government for its war in Gaza.
In February in an interview with news site Zeteo, he said what South Africans experienced during apartheid rule 鈥渋s on steroids in Palestine鈥.
