Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Kyiv would like to end the war with Russia next year through 鈥渄iplomatic means鈥, as both countries prepare for US President-elect Donald Trump鈥檚 return to the White House.

February 2025 would mark the third anniversary of Moscow鈥檚 invasion of Ukraine, with Russia鈥檚 troops gaining ground in recent months against Kyiv鈥檚 outmanned and outgunned soldiers.

The prospect of Trump returning to power in the US next year has raised questions about the future of the conflict, as the Republican president-elect has been critical of US military aid to Kyiv.

Meanwhile, North Korea 鈥 a key Kremlin ally 鈥 has sent thousands of its soldiers to help Moscow repel a Ukrainian offensive ongoing in Russia鈥檚 border Kursk region, according to Western officials.

Zelenskyy spoke a day after saying the war will end 鈥渟ooner鈥 than it otherwise would have done once Trump becomes president. He also spoke a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin held his first phone call with a major Western leader in nearly two years, speaking to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who initiated the call despite Kyiv鈥檚 objections.

鈥淔or our part, we must do everything we can to ensure that this war ends next year. We have to end it by diplomatic means,鈥 Zelenskyy said in an interview with Ukrainian radio. 鈥淎nd this, I think, is very important.鈥

There have been no meaningful talks between Russia and Ukraine, but Trump鈥檚 re-election has plunged the brutal conflict鈥檚 future into uncertainty, with the Republican repeatedly promising to cut a quick deal to end the war.

鈥淲e have to understand what the Russians want,鈥 Zelenskyy said.

Putin has said he will only accept talks with Ukraine if Kyiv surrenders Ukrainian territory that Moscow occupies.

The Kremlin said he repeated that demand in the phone conversation with Scholz on Friday.

Zelenskyy has rejected Putin鈥檚 conditions.

North Korean involvement

With North Korea sending troops into the most significant conflict on European soil since World War II, Russia鈥檚 invasion has sent shockwaves reverberating far beyond the continent.

For weeks, the West and Ukraine have warned thousands of Pyongyang鈥檚 troops were already helping Moscow鈥檚 forces in the Kursk region, where Kyiv has taken swathes of Russian territory since early August.

It follows months of tightening military ties between the two allied former Communist nations, with Moscow and Pyongyang ratifying a landmark defence pact on Tuesday.

South Korea has slammed its nuclear-armed hermit neighbour鈥檚 involvement, with Japan鈥檚 foreign minister joining the chorus of condemnation while on a visit to Ukraine on Saturday.

鈥淭his will not only deepen the severity of the Ukraine situation, but also have extremely significant implications for East Asia鈥檚 security situation,鈥 Takeshi Iwaya said, pledging further support.

Iwaya鈥檚 diplomatic visit took him to Bucha, a town outside the capital where Russia鈥檚 army is accused of committing horrific atrocities against civilians early in the war.

Following Russia鈥檚 retreat after a month-long occupation, the bodies of dozens of civilians were found shot dead in the street, some with their hands tied behind their backs.

G7 by Ukraine鈥檚 鈥榮ide鈥

Ukraine was angered after Germany鈥檚 Scholz reached out to Putin on Friday.

Berlin said Scholz 鈥渃ondemned Russia鈥檚 war of aggression against Ukraine and called on ... Putin to withdraw troops鈥.

It also said Scholz 鈥渦rged Russia to show willingness to negotiate with Ukraine with the aim of achieving a just and lasting peace鈥.

But Ukraine accused Scholz of an 鈥渁ttempt at appeasement鈥 and said the call would not achieve anything other than minimise Putin鈥檚 鈥渋solation鈥.

The chancellor 鈥 whose fragile coalition government collapsed last week 鈥 also faced blowback at home, with the conservative opposition party accusing the centre-left leader of handing Putin a 鈥減ropaganda win鈥.

Scholz said he had spoken to Zelenskyy before calling the Kremlin chief and also informed other Western allies of the call.

On Saturday, the G7 鈥 which includes many of Kyiv鈥檚 key backers 鈥 said Russia remained the sole obstacle to a just peace in Ukraine, pledging sanctions targeting Moscow.

鈥淲e will remain united by Ukraine鈥檚 side,鈥 the Group of Seven industrialised nations said in a statement marking 1000 days of the invasion.

Moscow has made steady advances in eastern Ukraine since this summer, inching closer to key hubs such as Pokrovsk and Kurakhove.

Zelenskyy said on Saturday Russian forces were suffering heavy losses and the advance had 鈥渟lowed down鈥 in some areas.

Ukraine was 鈥渁t war with a state that does not value its people, that has a lot of equipment, that does not care how many people die鈥, he added.
