Heather du Plessis-Allan: Labour might've lost its last best hope

I'm听surprised that voters听don鈥檛听really seem to like听Chris听Hipkins听that much.听

We've听spent quite a bit of time discussing听Chris听Luxon鈥檚听poor popularity, but听take a look听at last night鈥檚 poll: Hipkins鈥櫶齣s听really poor听as well.

His personal popularity in last night鈥檚听TVNZ听poll: 25%.

Last week in the听九一星空无限hub听poll, only 23%.

That means听three-quarters of us听don鈥檛听want him as PM.听

That鈥檚听bad for an incumbent prime听minister

Generally听a popular prime minister will sit in the听thirties or early forties if we like them.

And I'm surprised people don鈥檛 seem to like him that much because he technically has everything a politician needs to be popular.

He's听good with a one听liner, good at batting down tough questions听without听sounding听upset or nervous听or angry. Really smiley demeanour, quick to laugh, and open to media, going on talkback, and taking听questions.

He talks like a normal听kiwi.

He is听basically the听opposite听of what we had before.

So why听don鈥檛听we like him?

I suspect听it鈥檚听because voters听aren鈥檛 quite听as dumb as听politicians听assume, when they think a quick switcharoo at the top changes a party鈥檚 fortunes.

I suspect听it鈥檚听because voters听haven鈥檛听forgotten the stuff听that听frustrated听them about Labour.

They gave Chippy a chance, but they听haven't听seen him prove that his Labour is all that听different.听

Tell听you听what,听Labour听should听be听worried听about听that.

This spells trouble for听them because Chippy is the only asset听they鈥檝e听got.

They've听got听rubbish听policies,听they鈥檝e听got a听rubbish听track record听in the last 5.5 years, they've got rubbish ministers, and they鈥檝e got rubbish coalition partners.

So听the only thing they had going听for听them is a leader that was more popular听thanthe leader of the National Party.听

Well, that鈥檚 not true anymore.

The gap between them about ten weeks ago was 16%, the gap now is 7%.听

Unless he can lift his popularity, Labour听might鈥檝e听just lost its last best hope.
