First thing I听thought听when听I听saw the ad that Scott Robertson took out in the paper today thanking fans was that Razor is a bigger asset to听the All听Blacks听next year听than听I听think the rugby bosses realise.
Simply because he understands something they听don鈥檛听seem to, which is the importance of talking听directly听to the fans.
When was the last time you can recall a听departing听coach doing that when he听didn鈥檛听have听to?听
Would鈥檝e听been much听easier听to听post a short听message听on听Instagram, but听instead听he听took听the time to write a long message and then get it printed in the paper.听
If you听think听about听it,听he's听actually听always taken a听similar听approach in听communicating with听fans.听
He听actually tells听fans听what鈥檚听going on,听sometimes听he tells them too much and lands听himself in trouble听like he did with the AB's coaching drama.
And that is the polar听opposite of what we get听from the Rugby听Union, who听definitely听do not put fans anywhere close to the听centre听of what听they鈥檙e听doing.
I mean, remember what happened after that awful loss to the听Irish听last year?听
They听cancelled听the press conference听Sam听Cane and听Fozzie听were听supposed听to hold, because they听obviously听didn鈥檛听think听they needed听to give fans an听explanation听of what went wrong.
Same thing happened this year after the then听dominant听Chiefs lost the Super听Rugby听final to the Crusaders, Sam cane听didn鈥檛 front up.听
Doesn't听matter who was to blame for that,听either听Sam听or the coach made the call that he听didn鈥檛听need to turn up and talk to the fans.
For the longest听time听the fans have been forgotten.听
Whether听it鈥檚听putting on more听rugby听games than the fans can, or want to watch听or putting听them听on in the听evening when听plenty听of fans say they want to watch in the afternoon, or just not answering question.
The word has been that the reason it took so long for the rugby bosses to hire Razor as the AB鈥檚 coach is that they were听worried听about his unconventional antics: saying too听much,听breakdancing, all that kind of stuff.
I听think听they鈥檝e听got it听wrong.听
I think听that鈥檚听what they need.听听
I think they听need someone who does consider the fans, and Razor听is clearly听is that guy.听
