Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says the Dunedin Hospital project is frustrating.

鈥淲e are very committed to building a hospital in Dunedin, don鈥檛 get me wrong. But we have got to do it within the $1.9 billion fiscal envelope, otherwise that means that we can鈥檛 do Whangarei, Tauranga, Palmerston North, Nelson and other regional hospitals,鈥 Luxon told 九一星空无限talk ZB's Heather du Plessis-Allan.

Luxon said the government was receiving advice on how to proceed, with an option to scale back the construction or staging the project.

鈥淲e鈥檝e seen cost creep, scope creep from the Labour Government - whether it鈥檚 been ferries, school buildings, and now the hospital.鈥

Pressed on the Government鈥檚 spending priorities, Luxon said, 鈥渨e have put almost $30 billion into health, so there鈥檚 plenty of money in health鈥.

He said the Government needed to get better at spending on infrastructure.

Pressed again on the Government鈥檚 proposal to spend several billion dollars on a single road in Wellington and whether spending had been appropriately prioritised, Luxon said 鈥測ou just can鈥檛 have a project [the hospital] go from $1.2b when it started and heading out to $3b鈥.

Luxon said he was aware of Treasury鈥檚 warning of a structural deficit: 鈥淲e鈥檝e got to get back to financial discipline. We鈥檝e got to make sure we then set up for growth.鈥

He said it was possible to 鈥渄o more with less鈥.

He also said his Government鈥檚 spending cuts were being done 鈥渋n a sensible, balanced kind of way - we鈥檙e not throwing the country into austerity鈥.

On his push for civil servants to return to the office, Luxon said he was not surprised at the level of flak from the workforce.

鈥淲e want everyone in the office. It鈥檚 not an entitlement that you get to work from home.鈥

He said he had moved into Premier House over the weekend.

鈥淲e finally managed to get new paint, new curtains and new carpet.鈥

Responding to a question about whether it was a cold house, Luxon said: 鈥淲ell, I鈥檝e got a jumper鈥.

Regarding the capital gains on his apartment and media attention on it, Luxon said he had come to expect it.

鈥淚f we鈥檙e going to criticise people for being successful, let鈥檚 be clear - I鈥檓 wealthy, I鈥檓 sorted.鈥
