The minister who crushed the cars of 'boy racers' is looking for tougher deterrents and penalties on drivers fleeing police, as changes are proposed to the way the force handles pursuits.听

The changes include decision-making powers to field supervisors and introducing a more flexible command structure that would allow them to make decisions on whether chases should be abandoned.
They'd also be given the power to run fleeing driver pursuits against traffic flows.
Police and Corrections Minister Judith Collins told Mike Hosking there needs to be tougher action against the perpetrators because those who drive dangerously and put others' lives at risk believe they will get away with it.
