That’s Robbie Williams if you buy into his freshly released movie bio - ‘Better Man’. Williams penned the 1997 hit “Let Me Entertain You” which really is the theme song of the Australian Open. The movie was shot in Melbourne, brought a ton of money into the local economy and promptly flopped. The Open, shot in Melbourne, brought a ton of money into the local economy and has been a raging success.   Entertained? Hell yes.    The time zone is almost perfect for the New Zealand audience and the quality of the exchanges, with the blistering back stories, the crowd’s chimpanzee tea party schtick, and the on-court post-match interview baboonery has provided top-notch entertainment from the get-go.   The Kiwi involvement staggered at the pointed end of the doubles but gave us some bodies to cheer for in between popcorning our way through some remarkable tennis and some questionable off-court behaviour.    The post-match interview techniques left little to be desired, with the microphone monkeys failing to grasp their role —they are conduits between the players and the fans— no-one is there for their hot-take indulgence, ask some game relevant questions and crawl back into your cage. The backwash at least gave us something to muse over in between games.    The fan behaviour wasn’t much better, hitting a crescendo when the simians in the cheap seats booed Novak Djokovic for succumbing to injury. Classless to the end, but again an issue to keep us talking.   Then the tennis. We’ve been treated to some superb matches in the men's and women's draws on the way to two finals which should cap off the fortnight in some style. Three of the top for seeds have belted their way to the last dance, Madison Keys being the outlier, a player I expect the Ocker crowd to light up for, being such vocal fans of the underdog.    Sinner or Zverev, Sabalenka or Keys? It matters not, what I do know is that I’ll be entertained until the end, for that I am grateful.  Fri, 24 Jan 2025 20:48:19 Z The All Star Panel with Hamish McKay and Jason Pine: Sail GP, Shaun Stevenson, and tennis crowds /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/the-all-star-panel-with-hamish-mckay-and-jason-pine-sail-gp-shaun-stevenson-and-tennis-crowds/ /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/the-all-star-panel-with-hamish-mckay-and-jason-pine-sail-gp-shaun-stevenson-and-tennis-crowds/ The latest edition of 'The All-Star Panel' features Rugby Commentator Hamish McKay and Jason Pine (live from Sail GP).  On this weekend's agenda:  Why has Sail GP grown so quickly? Which technically isn’t a league and labours under the tired ‘Super’ prefix – you’d think after decades of pro sport, the marketing departments across all sports could come up with something better than ‘super’. Whoops, digression.  In essence, Grace is indulging in a sabbatical. More strength to her arm. As a young person, the experience of leaving our shores will be massive, not only for her game, but for her as a human being.   There is nothing inherently wrong with what she is doing. NZ Netball can’t stop her, and she will gain more than she will lose for the experience. Sure, some test caps will go down the gurgler, but her skill base will broaden playing in a more robust competition. Unlike rugby players, who flee the hard knocks of our comps to feather their nest in the limp Japanese set up.   So how does this equate to a punch in the face? Words. The Pen is mightier than the sword etc. The most telling part of her reasoning is this.  “I didn’t see any other club in New Zealand being able to tick those boxes for me in terms of growing my game and developing...” and “[I’ve] done all that I can at the club and I just really wanted to challenge myself to grow and be a better netballer at the international level to really add to my skill set. A move would be beneficial to me across the board.”  She’s outgrown the game here. She needs better, to become better.  The moves to upgrade, upskill and reinvent the way Netball NZ manage their competition have been lethargic, if this step from one of the game’s MVPs doesn’t hasten meaningful change, I’m not sure what will.   Wed, 01 Jan 2025 00:56:07 Z Aidan Rodley: TAB Trackside spokesperson on the retirement of Opie Bosson /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/aidan-rodley-tab-trackside-spokesperson-on-the-retirement-of-opie-bosson/ /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/aidan-rodley-tab-trackside-spokesperson-on-the-retirement-of-opie-bosson/ Champion New Zealand Jockey Opie Bosson has retired after a several decade career.  The Thoroughbred racing jockey decided it was his time to go after giving all he had to give.  TAB Trackside spokesperson Aidan Rodley said he is one of New Zealand's greatest ever jockeys. That high is Liam Lawson. He is following in the footsteps of NZ F1 greats such as Hulme, McLaren and Amon. He is the 10th Kiwi to breathe the rarefied air of Formula 1 and this week he inhaled the deepest breath of all. The news on Thursday night that the young man raised in Pukekohe had secured a Red Bull contract for 2025, racing for one of the best teams in Formula One, is still sinking in. After many years of battling through the categories on his way to the Everest of the sport, life just got a whole lot tougher. From karts to Formula First, through the Toyota Racing Series, Formula 3, the DTM and Formula 2 and some tantalising tastes of Formula 1 through the Racing Bulls team, this hot shoe has steadfastly kept his eyes locked on the prize. Now, after a drawn out and at times frustrating final run at a permanent seat, he's struck gold. Liam Lawson has arrived. He's ruffled feathers along the way, proving to many that his attitude and race craft is that of a Formula 1 pilot. Accusations of a lack of respect for the veterans of the sport have been met with measured aggression, a refusal to acquiesce to the insanity of an experience based hierarchy. He races with his elbows out, knowing that respect in motorsport comes when you beat the other guy fair and square. Names, teams and reputation mean bugger all. Liam is a pure racer, and that's what has taken him this far. He's at base camp now, this is where his years of toil and his bloody-minded attitude to the sport will need to be concentrated further for his final assault on the summit. Getting a seat in F1 is one thing, getting a seat in one of the top teams partnering the 4 times reigning champion Max Verstappen is another, but holding on to that seat and being instrumental in Red Bulls return to the constructor's championship, that's the  greatest step he needs to take. Beyond that? It's not worth thinking about. His entire life has been focused on this one opportunity. As difficult as the lead up has been to securing this incredibly rare role, it's been nothing compared to what he faces now. Formula 1 is immense. It's tied together by billions of dollars. The world is watching as the most insane sporting circus on the planet blasts through almost every continent. There is nowhere to hide. There are no excuses. For a kid from Aotearoa, whose parents sold their house to pay for what was essentially a pipe dream of a petrol head youngster, this is one of the most outstanding stories in New Zealand sport. It's had peaks and troughs;it's been many years in the making and now is the time to shine. The real work starts now. And I am so here for it. That'll do. This is where the teams attempt to claw back a fistful of the obscene amounts of money they’ve chewed up and spat out through the season.   Red Bull are out of the picture and has been for some time thanks to the ham-fisted and cumbersome efforts of their number two driver, the hapless Mexican Sergio Perez, who is stinking up his seat by virtue of millionaire investments and his ability to flog soft drink to central America. But that’s F1, the best drivers in the world racing against guys only there because of the finance they bring.   The constructer's title is a scrap between Ferrari and McLaren. This is where the fascination lies, the ability of four drivers to justify their seats and show their teams why they’re in F1.   In McLaren, it’s Aussie Oscar Piastri and English silver-spooner Lando Norris. Piastri runs hot and cold, but has picked up a win this year and looks to be talent to be reckoned with over the next few seasons. Norris is a driver who has the skills —three wins in 2024— but not the temperament required to lead a team to the promised land. No surprises for me if he runs out of talent when it really counts.    In Ferrari, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerk are waving the flag for the Tifosi, the maddest and most passionate fans in motorsport, maybe sport full stop.    Sainz has collected a brace of wins, Leclerk has three and is fighting Norris for second in the drivers’ championship, but Sainz appears to be the man who carries calm with him around the tracks.    The scrap between second and third for the drivers could well determine the constructers championship, which peddler can hold his nerve when it really means something.   The problem here is Leclerk got handed a 10 place grid penalty overnight for a new battery pack, which kind of makes my words redundant.  The other bunfight is down the grid between Haas and Alpine, 6th and 7th place up for grabs, the difference in prize money around NZ$15 million.   But for your average Kiwi racecar fan, this weekend is all about Liam Lawson’s last chance to prove his worth and collect a drive for next year’s championship. Lawson v Tsunoda is the scrap that will have my full attention.    Fri, 06 Dec 2024 21:51:27 Z
