Jason Walls: National’s critical mistake – playing voters for fools

In a chaotic double jab of shortsighted stupidity, the National Party seems听to have forgotten听two听of the most听important rules of politics.听

Don鈥檛听threaten voters and don鈥檛听forget that Winston Peters holds a grudge like no one else.听

In a move seemingly devoid听of any semblance of common sense, the National Party managed somehow kill two birds with one story. 听

In the Herald听on Sunday, campaign chair Chris Biship spoke of a scenario where neither the left nor the right blocs get to听60 seats.听

In his scenario, the right bloc does not include New Zealand First.听

He then went further. 听

鈥淭he second scenario is when there is essentially a听hung Parliament and NZ First is in the middle, but it is just impossible to do a deal between National, Act and NZ First. That is a very real and growing possibility and that would necessitate, essentially, a听second election.鈥澨

It was the quote that set the scene for the final week of the campaign. 听

It was interpreted as a threat to an already election-fatigued public. Bishop鈥檚 intention clear: A vote for New Zealand First could mean a vote for a second election. 听

Winston Peters was quick to comment, saying National was treating voters with contempt and he was听鈥渟caremongering鈥.听听

鈥淚t is telling voters National would instead enforce another costly election on the nation purely because of their own political expediency,鈥 Peters told the Herald鈥檚 Claire Trevett. 听

And Peters is right.听

A scenario where a weary听looking Chris Luxon would have to front up to the New Zealand public with his tail between his legs听and tell them the election鈥檚 back on is unfathomable.听

Unfathomable because of the impact it would have on the National Party.听

It鈥檚听not New Zealand First that would be punished in the polls 鈥 it would no听doubt be Luxon and his team.听

The gap between the left and right is already a lot narrower than many are aware. 听

Dragging Kiwis back to the polls would undoubtably see that gap narrow further,听to the point where the left may leapfrog the right. 听

A disaster scenario for National; a party on the cusp of winning back the treasury benches, forced back into opposition because of its hubris.听

But of course, it won鈥檛听happen.听

Bishop knew his threat was an empty one when he talked to one of New Zealand鈥檚 most respected political editors听about a story which he also knew would be frontpage news, given the gravity of the claim. 听

He gambled听on the threat working: It didn鈥檛.听

In Wednesday鈥檚 Tale of Two polls, National鈥檚听vote bumped a solemn one point听according to 1九一星空无限鈥 numbers; but they dropped almost 5 points according to 九一星空无限hub.听听

Meanwhile, New Zealand First remains听firmly above the five听percent threshold according to both polls. 听

The ploy to scare voters away from Peters failed and in the crucial last week of the campaign National looked desperate.听

Bishop鈥檚 gambit was a silly one 鈥 but听it鈥檚听not enough to sink the election for National. 听

When the history books are written, the defining moment of the 2023 election occurred on August 28, when Chris Hipkins unambiguously and unequivocally ruled out working with New Zealand First. 听

Since then, there have been no ifs buts or maybes in听terms of an about turn on that position. 听

For the left bloc, that means there's听no realistic path to power 鈥 meaning tomorrow night, Hipkins will听likely听need听to concede听the election.听

Over at National HQ, it will be Luxon鈥檚 night.听

But amid the cheering and speeches, the National leader鈥檚 mind will be on the next couple of months, and the horse trading he鈥檒l听be doing with Peters. 听

At New Zealand First HQ, Winston Peters won鈥檛听have forgotten听National鈥檚 final gambit to scare voters off his party. 听

A gambit that not only failed, but backfired. 听

Now he鈥檚听in the drivers鈥櫶齭eat 鈥 and no one holds a grudge like Winston Peters. 听
